Freeport is beautiful and scenic town with excellent shopping and amenities located in Cumberland County, Maine. First settled around 1700, the town once fell in the boundaries of North Yarmouth, when it was called Harraseeket after the Harraseeket River. The town then set off of North Yarmouth and was officially incorporated as Freeport on February 14, 1789. Today, Freeport is home to a range of rural, residential, oceanfront and recreational areas, providing plenty of room for every resident. These outlet stores, local boutiques, craft shops, and candy stores are all spread along the classic, New England brick sidewalks that dominate the charming historic streetscapes of the town.

Freeport's Desert of Maine

Freeport is home to a range of other interesting, historical, and entertaining sites of interest. One that is known throughout the country as Maine’s famous natural phenomenon is the Desert of Maine. This unique destination originated when the Tuttle family purchased the site for farming, their farming techniques led to soil erosion, eventually exposing a dune of sand-like glacial silt the grew to overtake the farm. Today the 40-acre tract of exposed glacial silt is preserved as a natural curiosity, and features a gift shop, a sand museum, and a farm museum.

Freeport's Public and Private Schools

Freeport is served by Regional School Unit Number 5. The town is home to five public schools; Morse Street School, Mast Landing School, Pownal Elementary School, Freeport Middle School, and Freeport High School. The town is home to several private schools, including L'École Française du Maine a French immersion and bilingual co-education school. This friendly and intelligent community offers excellent education to the town’s residents.
